When the Experience Matters Cast off the chains of civilization and return to the roots of man. When he hunted, fished and gathered to live, and breathed the air of the mountains and drank the water of the streams. Return to the land when the experience matters.
Located on Colorado's western slope, The High Lonesome Ranch offers customized outdoor sporting experiences in wing shooting, fly-fishing, big game hunting and a wide range of other activities. With comfortable, well-appointed accommodations in a variety of settings and mouth-watering meals served family style, it's the ultimate in Western hospitality.
Wingshooting at High Lonesome
| |
The High Lonesome Ranch wing shooting experience takes place in the spectacular setting of the Colorado Rockies western slope. With private and permitted lands totaling over 200 square miles, wing shooters have an almost endless array of hunting lands to choose from.
The ranch property ranges in elevation from 5000 to 9200 feet above sea level providing diverse covers in which to hunt. From rich valley bottoms covered with grain to wooded hillsides to mountain slopes, we hunt a variety of terrain. Wheat and rye fields create a fertile environment for our birds and the creek bottoms and sagebrush flats supply ample cover.
Pheasant, chukar, Hungarian partridge and native blue grouse are found throughout the ranch in abundant numbers. We supplement the natural reproduction of birds on the ranch with the release of mature adults.
Each hunter is entitled to normally harvest up to 10 birds daily. Additional birds are available for a nominal fee.
Guides
The High Lonesome Ranch provides only experienced guides who personalize your wing shooting experience based on your hunting skills and desired goals. Each guide has been individually selected based on his hunting skills, safety consciousness, demeanor, dog handling skills and terrain knowledge. We do our best to match client and guide to maximize your pleasure by producing an unrivaled hunting experience that meets your expectations. You'll improve your visit by telling us exactly what kind of hunt you want.
 Dogs
We typically run retrievers on the ranch, a hardy dependable breed that works industriously all day. However, should you wish to bring your favorite four-leggedcompanion, we understand completely and have kennels available.
 Season
The wing shooting season at the High Lonesome Ranch runs from September through March 1. Located as we are on the western slope, our mild winters allow us comfortable hunting. No 20° below zero days here. Little snow falls on the ranch at lower elevations making it easy to hunt pheasant, chukar and hun right through until early spring.
Cast & Blast
For those torn between fly rod and shotgun, we offer a fall Cast and Blast special. Spend half the day fly-fishing and the other half bird hunting. This ever popular package is available from September through October, and even into November depending on the weather.
 Sporting Clays
If you'd like to tune up your bird shooting skills or have a friendly wager with your friends, try our new sporting clays facility. This well-equipped center provides a challenging five-stand clays course with pheasant walk and a nearby professional 300-yard rifle and pistol range. You can watch your friends or just relax in the adjacent cozy cabin.
No License Needed
Since the ranch is licensed as a commercial wildlife park, you do not need a hunting license to hunt pheasant, chukar or Hungarian partridge. We have a modest pro shop at the ranch that can supply many of your shooting needs including shotgun rental. |
Lodging at High Lonesome
| |
| |
The High Lonesome Ranch offers multiple lodging options throughout the ranch. Most fishing and wing shooting guests stay in either the Guest House or the Pond House. Both are well-appointed accommodations that ensure a comfortable and relaxing time while away from field and stream.
Located closest to the main lodge and dining room, the main Guest House is a spacious retreat designed for up to 18 guests. In addition, this comfortable home-like lodge includes a kitchen, breakfast room, great room, screened reading porch, relaxing open deck and spacious recreation room with an antique gaming table, satellite TV and pool table.
In addition to the Guest House, the spacious and newly renovated Pond House provides room for up to 9 guests. Here you'll also find a great room and a screened sun room with western views of mountains and fields where elk, deer and turkeys roam. Large trout cruise within casting distance of the front door and often tempt early-bird anglers before breakfast.
For guests who prefer a more secluded experience, The High Lonesome Ranch has several cozy private cabins throughout the property. Eight miles up our valley is located the private Forshay Cabin. The two bedroom, two bath, kitchen, dining and sitting area design of this cabin make it very comfortable for four people. Especially popular during hunting season, Forshay also has an adjacent guest cabin with two bedrooms and one bath.
The Hay Canyon Cabin is another wonderfully located lodge reserved primarily for big game hunters or a family seeking a more remote experience. This well equipped private four bedroom cabin is set in an exclusive area of the ranch, nestled in its own private valley adjacent to beautiful rock formations and aspens. It has a full kitchen, fireplace, deck, three bedrooms and a full bath.
Equestrians prefer our McKay Fork cabins situated in the heart of our property near excellent riding trails that will take you atop the famous Book Cliffs where the alpine views are spectacular. |
Dining at High Lonesome Every day at the ranch includes three full meals that will charge you up for a day in the outdoors. Start with a hot breakfast that might include eggs, French toast, Belgian waffles or pancakes. Depending on the day's activity, lunch is served either in the main lodge or streamside and can include both hot and cold dishes. Sandwiches, salads, and desert will keep you going all afternoon.
Our evening meal at the ranch is the perfect ending to a day in the field. Whether you were casting for our huge trout, working the fields for birds, or just plain sitting around, the Rocky Mountain air will surely help you work up an appetite. We've got just the answer.
In keeping with the best of western hospitality, meals at the ranch are served family style. While you recount that big rainbow you landed up-valley or the deer and elk you saw driving back down, our professional staff will prepare and serve a sumptuous meal. We strive to use only the freshest ingredients available. Top off the evening with home-made strawberry shortcake, apple pie or peach cobbler and you'll be ready to sit by the fire and add a few more inches to that big rainbow you caught. Should you have any special dietary requirements just let us know when you make your reservation and we'll do our best to meet them. After all, we aim to please.
