Pheasant
South Dakota is famous for the Chinese Ring-Neck Pheasant, the most sought-after upland game bird in existence. Dense pheasant populations can be found throughout northeastern South Dakota, and ample public hunting areas provide an excellent hunting experience. A listing of private landowners who allow hunting on their property is available upon request.
Season
The regular season traditionally opens the third Saturday in October each year, with the 2-day youth season on the first weekend in October. A 3-day resident-only season takes place Saturday-Monday after youth season.
Licensing
A small game license is needed to hunt pheasants. Nontoxic shot is required when hunting pheasants on most public lands.
Waterfowl
Every October, the skies above the Aberdeen area fill with a spectacular assortment of waterfowl. Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge, located just 30 miles northeast of Aberdeen, is a major stopping point for thousands of snow, blue and Canadian geese in their annual southern migration. Every pond, slough and lake becomes a resting spot for a wide variety of ducks as well, including mallards, teal, and redheads.
Season
Fall waterfowl seasons normally open in late September to early October, and the last goose season closes in December/January. Spring light goose hunting is open Feb. 1 through May 8.
Licensing
Nonresidentsneed A South Dakota nonresident waterfowl license to hunt migratory waterfowl in South Dakota. Fall licenses are limited in number and distributed by lottery drawing. Thus, one must submit an application with payment either by paper or computer on or before the indicated deadline. All nonresidents must complete the Migratory Bird Certification questions on the application. The license that is issued includes the Migratory Bird Certification privileges.
