Upland Birds Rich in hunting tradition, Big Bend Ranch sprawls along the mighty Missouri River and consists of over 5,600 acres of farm and ranch land that is managed with one thing in mind, fantastic Pheasant hunting. The hunting is exceptional because, after your safety, wildlife management is our top priority. Our excellent Ringneck Pheasant hunting doesn't just happen, we make it happen. Game management plans tree belts, CRP, weed patches, food plots, abundant nesting, and winter cover have brought our wild bird population through many winters.
Our farming methods and bird numbers remind hunters of the great hunting of a bygone era. Wily Ringneck Pheasant and Hungarian Partridge abound on Big Bend ranch in numbers too numerous to believe. In addition Hungarian Partridge, Sharptail Grouse and Prairie Chicken may also be encountered. Our Pheasant hunts are so spectacular that Big Bend Ranch has been honored as the host ranch of the South Dakota Governor's hunt annually since 1992.
Waterfowl
Big Bend Ranch adjoins the water of North America's premier waterfowl flyway and is renowned for spectacular waterfowl pass shooting and field shooting over decoys. A rare combination of state refuge choked with geese, gently rising hills to grain fields and strategically placed hunting blinds combine to make the hunting exceptional. Big Bend Ranch is the home of one of the largest Canada Goose staging areas in North America and undoubtedly has some of the finest Canada Goose hunting in North America.
Each year hundreds of thousands of Canada Geese stop at the adjacent refuge on their migration south. The geese leave the refuge on the river and cross the bluffs to feed in our fields, making the most fantastic field shooting over decoys imaginable. With proper winds and weather, pass shooting is unbelievable. Canada Geese are the primary species and at certain times you will encounter large flights of Northern Mallards, Whitefront, Snow and Blue Geese.
Big Bend Ranch's many stock dams attract migrating mallards and provide another opportunity to hunt over decoys. Waterfowl hunting usually takes place from sunrise until 10:30 AM and in the afternoon from 3:00 PM until sunset. Combining upland game and waterfowl hunts allow you to hunt sunrise to sunset if so desired. Lodges & Dining Our lodges, each with its own distinctive character, create the perfect environment for you and your guests to relax and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow hunters. Nestled on this private hunting paradise, the lodges overlook Two Deer Lake to the east and the Missouri River bluffs to the west.
Here you will witness the breathtaking South Dakota sunrise which is rivaled only by the spectacle of wildlife heading to roost against the magnificent South Dakota sunset. You will enjoy these sights while relaxing on the decks or in one of our great rooms or during a peaceful evening stroll.
