Our newest facility (2001) has proven its worth over the past couple of seasons. We call it the kennel building, but it's much more that that. All hunts originate and end in this facility. We sign in the hunters, load their gear and jump on the bus all inside a climate controlled building. Our dogs can be loaded in the trailer, water, coolers, shells and all the necessities are stored inside for easy access. We have found it has better organized our hunts.
The most important benefit to our hunters is the use of the building. After a great day of hunting, we can pull into the facility and a fully stocked lounge awaits the hunters while guides tend to the birds and dogs. We have received wonderful reviews from our hunters on this addition to our facilities.
Near the kennel building is our "cook shack" where all of our meals are served. It is a very comfortable place to take a break and enjoy some of mom's home-cooking. Everyone has found the lodge to be very relaxing place to catch their breath at the end of the day. Satellite t.v., jacuzzi tub, fireplace, and a back deck frequented every morning by pheasants are a few of the things you will enjoy.
We have recently added a regulation skeet range to our facility list. It has been a wonderful place to "tune-up" prior to the hunt. We also see many hunters shooting some competitive games after hunting.
There are many places in South Dakota to experience wonderful pheasant hunting. The re
ason hunters frequent a particular location has to do more with people than the birds.
Phenomenal pheasant hunting attracts hunters to South Dakota, but it's the people that bring them back year after year. We realize that fact at Broken Arrow Farms and make every effort to welcome our hunters as family. If providing a great hunt experience just involved having plenty of birds, this business would be easy. Broken Arrow Farms realizes that having your hunters return year after year and bringing more friends is the key to long-term success. It is the commitment of our staff to treat everyone to a relaxing, fun-filled special event.
Jim Cruse owned and farmed the ground of the present Broken Arrow Farms since the 1950's. Jim was a cattle rancher and farmer. As Jim reached retirement (1996) the decision was made to sell the ground in the area. Merrill Olson and Mark Haugan (friends through their construction related businesses) had a chance to view the ground and were impressed with the quality of the ranch. They decided to fulfill a life long dream to own a beautiful South Dakota farm. With the abundant wildlife present, it only seemed natural that a commercial hunting operation would be better use of the ground than traditional farming... so Broken Arrow Farms was born. It has been a wonderful ride ever since. Every year brings more friends and thus more changes. It has been a busy, but satisfying journey that we hope has put many smiles on our clients faces over the years.
Our commitment to excellence would not be possible without the help of our staff of family members and friends.

Q: Do we hunt on private land?
A: All of Broken Arrow Farms hunting ground is privately owned and farmed by our own employees for our exclusive use. It is actually illegal in South Dakota to guide hunters on public land which some outfits occasionally do.
Q: Is blaze orange required?
A: It is not required by law, but we highly encourage wearing either a blaze cap or vest. We can provide these garments for you.
Q: With a large group in a field with shotguns... is it safe?
A: We make every effort to make pheasant hunting a safe experience. A safety meeting takes place prior to hunting. Safety is closely monitored during the hunt.
Q: Can I bring a dog?
A: We encourage people to bring dogs. There is more joy hunting with your own dog. We have kennels available during your stay. Our experience has been that the big country combined with the tremendous amount of birds are a little overwhelming at first, to even experienced gun dogs. We will normally work it so the dogs and the hunters will all enjoy the experience.
Q: How do we get the birds home?
A: Many of our hunters opt to have the birds shipped once they return home. Some will take a cooler of birds on the airplane on departure, others choose to donate some of the their birds and take a smaller amount with them. We also have options for smoked birds, smoked sticks, jerky and other favorites.
Q: Do the guides carry guns?
A: Absolutely Not!
Q: How is the late season hunting?
A: If your heart races at the sound of 100+ birds flushing, then come hunting in December. The birds are bunched up and very flighty which makes for a challenging hunt. If cold weather isn't a problem, late season hunting is a truly memorable experience.
Q: Do we have long drives between hunts?
A: No, all of our hunting ground surrounds our facilities. The furthest field is only three miles away. Many are literally "out-the-front-door".
Q: Do you have clay pigeons to shoot?
A: Yes, we have a regulation skeet course with a high and low house to hone your skills. The use is unlimited to our package hunters.
Q: Are the birds wild or pen-raised?
A: South Dakota is home to millions and millions of pheasants. Any commercial operation that focuses an effort on habitat will be home to countless numbers of ringnecks. Wild birds in their natural surroundings is our focus at Broken Arrow Farms. We have over 1,000 acres in a South Dakota preserve, which allows us to increase the season length, bag limits, and shooting hours. Under South Dakota regulations, we are required to release birds in order to take advantage of these extended opportunities. It is not a "shoot" where birds are place in the fields ahead of the hunters, it is an itensively managed, stocking program to supplement our wild bird population.
Q: Can we do an unguided hunt?
A: All of our hunts are fully guided for safety and liability reasons. Our land is surrounded by private land with the borders sometimes not well defined. Our guides make sure everything takes place in a safe and legal manner. If a small group wants to work an area by themselves, their guide simply picks up the group at the other end of the area.

Had an absolutely wonderful time, as always, with you and Broken Arrow. Thank you for the nickel tour. Alex is already talking about when we're going back next year. If Broken Arrow can get wives interested in hunting, there is something special going on. Best Regards, -David, Alex, the Bravo

Thanks, Mark for making our spring break hunt wonderful. We had a great time! You have a new genaration of fans, and even a new potentil employee (Tim). We love Dakota, even my wife has given in to his charm. He loves going on walks with us, and so far is not agressive at all with other dogs, he even rolls over on his back and is submissive to our beagle! It snowed here in Billngs about a foot last night so he feels right at home. We can wait to show everyone your photos. Thanks again, see you this fall, -Tad Butt

What a touch of class! I just received my calendar from you guys. It is fantastic. The experience last fall was beyond description. I can't wait until Oct 15 of this year for a return trip. I am bringing my boys with me. -Anthony Chapman

I just wanted to thank you and Gary for setting up the pheasant hunting day last week. Nicholas and I very much enjoyed the hospitality and all the birds we saw. It will probably be the record time for filling our limit of any pheasant hunt that we will ever do. I have never seen so many birds as we did during our stay in South Dakota. Thanks, -Dan Leiker

Over the top trip! Incredible hunts! Anxious to see our handiwork posted to the gallery. Doesn't look like they're in there yet. If they are, point me in right direction. Want to show some of my fellow Michigan hunters how it's done in S.D! Thanks, Ken (12/9-10/2005 Doug, Lou, Mike, Craig, Cliff, & Ken crew)

Merrill thanks again for the great time last Friday. The boys are still talking about the birds and of course the misses. They still can't believe how many birds they were seeing. Tim made the best statement when he said he did not realize what differences in skill levels there was in shooting. If we do the hunt again I think I would take the boys behind the barn and let them shoot some clay birds first which would give them a good warm up. If you get a chance to post or send us some pictures that would be great. -David Kalil

I just wanted to drop yall a note to say how much we enjoyed our trip. Lewis nor I had ever been pheasant hunting or to South Dakota. I had all intentions of having a terrible time. (I am not a cold weather person) BUT I loved it. Everyone made us feel so special. We are already talking about next year. Our 19 year old son will be coming with us. Again thanks for everything. Dont forget yall are ALL invited to visit South Mississippi when it get too cold for you there. We would love to return some of the hospitality that we were shown. I hope that our gang wasnt too much for all of yall. When we get together we do have a good time. Thanks, -Sandy

I have had the opportunity to travel a great deal and experience many fine outings but hunting with you guys moves to the top of the list. The quality of the entire experience exceeded my expectations many times over. From the hospitality to the dogs, you guys have built a winner and I can't wait to return.
There are some things you hope never change because that can't be improved upon and you have one in Broken Arrow Farms.
Again, thanks for making my trip so memorable. -Ralph E. Dalton

I want to thank you for the wonderful hunt that Marsha and I had last week. It was the first time ever that she took a gun into the field and my first pheasant hunt. It was a very positive experience for both of us to share. The facilities, food and the hunting are first class. We really enjoyed your mothers and Brenda's cooking. That really gives the family atmosphere we were looking for in a hunting camp and of course the number of birds you have just tops it off. The photos of Marsha and I in the field will always bring back fond memories. No greater complement can be said than "We will be back!" -Marsha and Jeff Lea

Received the Broken Arrow Calendar. I have it hanging in front of me at the computer desk so that I will see it every day. I love the photos. Each one brings back a wonderful memory. When the year is done I plan to take the calendar photos and place them in a scrapbook along with a lot of other pictures that have been collecting dust over the years. I have been going to make up a scrap book for the past 35 years but always either forget or have other priorities. Now that I have been retired for the past year, I will take the time to put the memories where they belong. We are looking forward to October and visiting Broken Arrow again. I will turn 70 years old in June and hope that I can hunt each year for the next 20 at least. When I get to old to walk I can at least prop myself up in a chair and block at the end of the field. -Ed Cleary |
