The Gunning

First and foremost, Wynfield Plantation is all about hunting quail, with classic shotguns, stirring bird dogs and fine companionship that can be found only in a setting such as this.

This means that Wynfield's Gunning Family has ready access to some of the finest shotguns, gun fitters and gunsmiths on earth, ready to service the guns you may already own or to custom fit and build a shotgun specifically tailored to your own individual measurements and personal tastes.
Anyone who has ever experienced the joy of gunning quail at Wynfield Plantation with a fine shotgun and classic bird dogs is certain to look forward to returning here to the very center of the quail hunting universe. Perhaps this is why in 2005 Wynfield Plantation was honored to be named the Orvis Wingshooting Lodge of the Year.
What a fine and glorious morning. A leisurely, uninterrupted breakfast, one more cup of coffee, easy conversation with friends old and friends new, and the sweet beckoning anticipation of being in the field by nine. Mr. Bob' is indeed a kind bird to hunt. And sitting here waiting in a rocker on the porch at the main lodge, just as you think, really it simply cannot get any better, up pull your guides with your dogs and your ride. And your coming winter dreams.
It's all about the birds. And the dogs. And family and friends both old and new that are somehow closer when gunning bobwhite than you ever are doing anything else.
It's that timeless moment when the dogs are on point, and you know the air around you is about to be filled with the thunder of wings and the sweet resonance of your shotgun speaking with conviction in the cool morning breeze.
And when it is done and the birds are retrieved and the moment is crystalline and perfect, you ease out on the trail through the sweet Georgia pines and scented sage grass.
And now you get to do it all again.
The Kennels
Fire. It's that simple. That's all it takes to be a fine bird dog. Nothing more. And certainly nothing less.
It's the result of years of dedicated training by men who know how to develop and nurture the instincts the dogs already possess long before they take their first breath. It's the infinite care, the extreme patience, and the respect for the breeds and the bloodlines that hold such depth as to care for nothing other than to love the hunt and to live for the experience. It's the result of pure love for the dogs by the men, who as their wives will probably tell you, likely circle three times themselves before coming to bed at night and who awaken each morning with a certain gleam in their eyes, a reflection of the pure pleasure that comes with the opportunity to spend yet another day afield with the dogs and the birds they so dearly love.
From English Setters and Pointers to German Shorthairs, Brittany Spaniels, English Cockers and American Labadors. Wynfield Plantation is part of the Orvis Endorsed Dog Breeding and Training Program and maintains one of the finest kennels in North America.
We have a state of the art Whelping Center for our new puppies and a purpose-built training pond for Labs and other water retrievers. Whether members of our own kennels or dogs our clients and friends have entrusted to our care and training, each of these dogs is a member of our family and receives professional training and encouragement along with the love and care that enables them to realize their full potential.
The Lodges
A choice hunting destination is measured in many ways, but in the end it is only as good as the accommodations, the food and the friends with whom you share the experience. And of course the hunting. And if when you leave, you are already anxious to return, then we feel truly honored to include you as a member of the Wynfield family.
Every hunter has tales of just how grueling hunting can actually be. Long days, short food, sleeping on the hard cold ground. It's enough to make a grown man wonder whatever got into him.
