South Dakota is going to have great Wild Pheasant numbers again this season.
The Chuckar Partridge and Hungarian Partridge are also looking great this year. We are seeing a lot of nests out in the fields. It has been a long time since we had descent numbers of Hungarian Partridge anywhere in the state. We transplanted a few thousand Hungarian Partridge and Chuckar Partridge last year and it is definitely paying off.
You are able to harvest three (3) Pheasants, five (5) Partridge, in any combination of Hungarian and Chuckar Partridge and three (3) Sharptail Grouse.
We don’t have a large population of grouse on our land but if we limit early enough in the day I often take people up to the Prairie Pothole Region specifically to hunt for grouse. They have a pretty descent population of Sharptail Grouse in that area.

We also have transplanted some Black Pheasants and Buff colored Pheasants. These are beautiful birds. We have already released them this year at only five (5) weeks of age. We only have about 10-20% of these birds survive but when we do it this way they fly just as hard and are as elusive as pheasants born in the wild. Some of these five week old birds we release do get lucky enough to mix in with a wild hens brood of chicks.
You will absolutely love these different strains of birds we have in the field. Don’t worry, there are still 25,000 Wild Ringneck’s on our land just waiting to make fools out of us all. If you have any doubt at all how these Black and Buff colored Pheasants fly, take a look at some of our videos and you will see how quick they bust out of the cover and are out of range in a heartbeat. Most people that are lucky enough to harvest one of these colored birds have them mounted. They are absolutely beautiful. If you don’t want the bird we will be more then happy to keep it and have it mounted. In turn we wil let you harvest an extra bird in it’s place. We can do this because we all have licenses but don’t carry guns while guiding our customers.
