About eight miles east of Wagner, S.D. and less than 20 miles north of the Missouri River, Papa Joe’s Pheasant Farm offers two kinds of hunting packages on nearly 1,400 acres of prime bird country where Lewis and Clark once roamed.
Sportsmen can make a “do-it-yourself” excursion where they can gain access to the land then must fend for themselves. Others opt for the full hunt deal, which including hunting, lodging and food. For the full hunt package, people only need to bring their guns, ammunition and personal articles. Papa Joe will take care of the rest.
“We provide lodging, guides, home-cooked meals, refreshments and bird cleaning and freezing services for people who order the full pheasant hunting package,” explained Joe “Papa Joe” Podzimek, lodge owner. “We’ll also provide transportation during the hunt. Each hunter must provide his or her own transportation to the lodge, license, shells, guns and coolers to haul back their pheasants.”
For those choosing the full hunt package, the lodge ranch house consists of six bedrooms that can comfortably sleep six to eight people. After the hunt, guests may relax in front of a big-screen television, shoot pool or play darts and foosball. Some people even participate in hunts for prairie chickens, rabbits and coyotes.

Many people fly commercially into Sioux Falls, S.D., about 100 miles northeast of the lodge and rent a car. Private pilots can land at a nearby short field in Wagner. Those who come typically find good shooting on outstanding pheasant habitat.
“We had a good season in 2008-09,” Papa Joe said. “The season generally runs from late October through early January. The birds were there and they flew well. Some people come here with a lot of experience shooting clay pigeons, but shooting wild pheasants is another story.”
Guests at Papa Joe’s mainly hunt on Conservation Reserve Program lands, prairies and pasturelands crisscrossed by creeks. They can also hunt on some corn and milo croplands interspersed amid brushy, rolling hills. All of it provides good habitat for birds.
“Our diverse wildlife and terrain will assure that everyone has a great time pheasant hunting,” Podzimek said. “We have some great places to go pheasant hunting. We have excellent habitat for the birds, but to augment the native population, we release a few hundred birds each year after the season so they are wild by the time the next season begins. We really don’t have to release any birds, though, because we have so many wild pheasants.”
Looking for more adventure? Some lodge guests drive about 16 miles to the Fort Randall Indian Casino or fish the nearby Missouri River. Well-known for its big walleyes, the river produces some ’eyes approaching 10 pounds as well as several other species of game fish.
