The guides and staff here at Tumbling Creek www.thetumblingcreeklodge.com, would like to invite you to come and enjoy unforgettable quail hunting the way it use to be when every fence row held a covey of bobwhites, and a well trained pair of gun dogs was more coveted than a Cadillac. With first class lodging, ample private rooms, and a new conference center we can accommodate the needs of any avid wing shooter. Whether you’re looking for the quail hunt of a lifetime, or planning your next corporate outing, we can assure you that your experience at Tumbling Creek will be one for memory.
Tumbling Creek Lodge was opened officially to the public in the fall of 2005. We were previously known as Whispering Oaks and were a strictly private wing shooting and hunting destination for many corporations in the region. Specializing in bob white quail and eastern wild turkey hunts we honed our skills in land management and wildlife habitat. Focusing strictly on the grounds we soon realized that the game populations would flourish once non native and invasive species were removed from their habitat. For over ten years prior to the opening of Tumbling Creek we experimented with many types of warm season grasses and native shrub species and with the help of Quail Unlimited and experts from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, we have found a recipe for success. The implementing of several sound land management and wildlife incentive programs along with early release systems and covey protection sites have had a positive effect on our bird populations, and because of those early initiatives we are enjoying wonderful wing shooting today.
Lodging
Our main lodge and conference center along with our three private cabins and gourmet kitchen are located on our water front property fifty miles west of Nashville Tennessee. Nestled along a private 2 ½ mile stretch of crystal clear tumbling creek, we have created an area that is relaxing and a pleasure just to experience. This location has been the inspiration for many beautiful works by some very well known landscape and wildlife artists. We are fortunate and blessed to be located on the banks of one of a handful of freestone spring fed creeks in middle Tennessee. The clear cold creek boasts a wide variety of fresh water fish species; however we focus our efforts on the rainbow and occasional brown trout that call tumbling creek home.
Our Staff
Hunt and operations manager, Tyler Wilson has spent much of his life knee deep in some of the best trout waters east of the Mississippi. A native East Tennessean he enjoyed the wonderful fishing the Smokey Mountains had to offer. While attending Appalachian State University a quiet little college nestled in the mountains of Western North Carolina, he was surrounded by cold water streams and mountains teaming with grouse, and wild turkeys. Throughout his college career he dedicated himself to the sport of fly fishing and introducing others to the joys nature has to offer. It was a perfect fit for Tyler to join the team at Tumbling Creek, with his passion for bird dogs and his strong dedication to fly fishing he has brought a spark to the overall atmosphere.
The Dogs
We have been dedicated to upland bird hunting since our inception; however our love for wing shooting was born out of our passion for well trained and mannered gun dogs. The electrifying frenzy of a covey rise would mean very little without the majesty and the expertise of a well matched pair of gun dogs. For us the joy of hunting comes with the realization of the potential in each dog run. We understand what it takes to nurture a young dog and bring it up in a world full of opportunities for it to succeed. We have learned that if the breeding is right then the dog with a little help and plenty of birds will teach himself. Great dogs in their element, performing for no one but you, that in its purest form is what we are seeking here at Tumbling Creek.
We are achieving our gun dog goals with the joint effort of Keith Pierce, master trainer and guide from “Pretty Boy Kennels” Keith has been with Tumbling Creek as a guide and trainer since our opening. He has brought his knowledge of bird dogs, along with his skills as a professional guide to our grounds and helped us achieve a very strong and talented kennel.
Our philosophy here at Tumbling Creek, is to focus on the potential of our dogs. We do not discriminate between breeds, but rather fit dogs to the personalities of our guides. Each dog has its own advantages and disadvantages due to the breed; however with a good matching of handler, brace partner, and training we can enhance the positives and tone down the negatives.
Tumbling Creek Lodge is here to preserve a tradition enjoyed for so many years in the Volunteer State. We have been dedicated to habitat restoration and quail recovery. Our clients have been enjoying big covey rises for years, and now that everyone can come and enjoy the beauty of wing shooting and the satisfaction that accompanies a good hunt, we are excited about things to come.
Habitat Rich Environment
Our lodge and hunting properties are located in Humphreys County, Tennessee near the Tennessee River. We have over 2100 acres of prime hunting areas dedicated entirely to wildlife. Our land has been transformed through hard work and research into a habitat rich environment where quail and other wildlife thrive. We have reintroduced many species of native plants such as varying species of warm season grasses and bundle flower. We have also allowed our edges and fence rows to become thick with honeysuckle and briars, which are essential for quail and other small game. With the advice of small game biologists from the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency, (TWRA) and other wildlife habitat managers we have created an area for our clients to hunt that is rich with game and great for stretching your legs behind a brace of well trained gun dogs.
Skilled Guides
All of our quail hunting here is done on foot; however we accommodate those individuals who are unable to make some of the walks, with specially equipped hunting buggies. Our guides are specially trained to make each hunt an exciting and unforgettable trip, using their skills in shooting and basic gun maintenance, to quickly solve any trouble in the field should it arise. Though all of our guides are trained to make each hunt smooth and safe, their main job is to work dogs and provide a bad joke or two. With us quail hunting is about enjoying times with friends and our job is to make sure that all of our clients can relax and hunt.
Gun Dogs
Here at Tumbling Creek we are dog crazy. If it can run and point birds then we love them. We take pride in our dog work and train all of our dogs. We have a working relationship with each gun dog and do not judge dogs by breed, only ability. While all of our hunts are fully guided and only require that you enjoy yourself, we do encourage our guests to bring their own gun dog if they wish. We have special kennels set aside to accommodate outside dogs only.
Licensing & Safety First
We are a full service and licenses lodge and that allows us to set our own season for upland birds. We pre purchase all licenses needed for our clients to hunt birds, and only require that youths successfully complete their hunters safety course. We take care of your entire trip before you arrive, from any dietary needs to what shell you most prefer to shoot. With us you can truly relax and enjoy friends and the atmosphere of a good hunt.
Bag Limits
There is no bag limit on quail and every hunter may take as many quail home with him as are taken during the days hunt. All birds are cleaned and processed on site and will be available upon your departure.
Large Groups
We also offer corporate hunts for large groups. This is a full day event loaded with lots of shooting and good food. The day consists of a mourning driven pheasant shoot followed by lunch and an afternoon of quail hunting and pheasant hunting with guides and dogs.
The eastern wild turkey is one of the most elusive and unpredictable game species on the planet. With eyesight rivaling that of a red tail, and hearing ten times that of a human, the concept of calling one into range seems ridicules. Here at Tumbling Creek our experienced group of guides sets out each spring to get their clients closer than they have ever been. We spend countless hours scouting and studying all of our 2100 acres in preparation for spring season. On average our guides spend more time in the woods alone looking and listening than they do with their clients during the hunt.
Our job as guides and callers is to get our clients on birds. That is our mission and goal, we dedicate all of our time during the month long spring gobbler season to ensure that each of our clients is always satisfied. We hope that not only do they enjoy the hunt, but come away with an appreciation of these majestic birds and what it takes to get’em close.
We have had a 90% success rate for the last four years on our mature birds during the spring season with our most harvested in the spring of 2005 of 34 birds. Availability is limited and spaces book up fast, so to be sure that you get the dates you want please book early. Our season starts around the first of April and runs into May with the peak periods being around the middle of the season depending on weather.
This spring Tumbling Creek Lodge, and Fly South, Middle Tennessee’s premier fly shop have joined forces to bring outstanding trout fishing to middle Tennessee. We are offering excellent fly fishing for trout, large mouth bass, as well as other species. All of our trips are fully guided and include meals and lodging at one of TCL’s four star lodges. Our fishing is done on all private waters so there is a guarantee that you will be the first one on the creek when you start your day. We do not over pressure our fisheries so fishing, though technical can be very rewarding. We try and keep the number of anglers at the lodge low so that we can dedicate our attention to each angler as they need it. For this reason we prefer booking groups of two to six anglers to stay with us at any given time. While here your party will not have to worry about a noisy crowded lodge, you will have it all to your self.
About The Fish
Our anglers catch fish up to twenty six inches long, and many of those fish have been taken on dry flies. The fishing is strictly fly tackle, and can be very technical at times and though sight casting is very common many of the fish tend to be very selective and can be slow to eat. Good casting technique is very helpful due to close proximity of trees, rocks, and other obstructions. Many of your casts will be roll casts and accuracy can be critical, however beginners and inexperienced anglers catch their share of the lunkers in our large pools and open runs.
The water in the stream runs cool and clear for the entire year, so fish in the creek hold over from year to year. The creek fishes nicely all year, however the best times run from late fall into early spring with nice fish being caught up into July. All fishing is done on foot, with waders being a must for cool weather; however wet wading can be done during May and June.
Bass Fishing
All of our bass fishing is done on our private 23 acre lake which is stocked with bass, grass carp, and shell crackers all of which can be caught on varying types of fly patterns. We fish out of boats with two anglers per guide. We have high success rates on our bass fishing, and we routinely boat four to six pounders.
Tumbling Creek is proud to announce the opening of three new facilities for the fall of 2007. Our four-star lodge is located in Bucksnort, Tennessee and is nestled along the banks of Tumbling Creek and Bold Springs. Guest can enjoy the breath-taking views from our back deck overlooking rolling hills and tumbling water while enjoying mouth-water appetizers and homemade dinner delights.
