High Plains Wingshooters has leased some of the finest goose hunting imaginable in one of the finest areas in the country. Why do we think this area is so good? Well, for starters, goose hunting pressure in Wyoming is extremely light relative to other outstanding hunting areas.
This certainly helps, but the other thing is that this particular area has a number of refuge areas set up to give migrating birds resting areas.
Those resting areas coupled with plenty of food crops for them keep these geese in the area for extended periods of time.
We have made efforts to lease and purchase properties that are near these refuge areas so that we always have birds available.
Our great locations as well as seasoned professional guides make your hunt a success. Our guides are expert callers, expert setters, and have large spreads of decoys to fool even the wariest birds.
They will scout relentlessly for the right places to hunt so that they can assure you of the best possible hunt for your day in the field. While not every day is perfect our success rate is extremely high. We strive to bring birds inside 30 yards to give high percentage shots in the front of the blind.
About Us
High Plains Wingshooters is the latest venture of Bret and Candy Van Rensselaer. After building and developing a number of lodges and outdoor adventure programs – including the full service North Platte Lodge and Rockin 7 Ranch – the Van Rensselaers have put together HPW to give wingshooters the opportunity to experience the best Canada Goose Hunting available.
The *no-host guest house lodging is the newest program. Our goal is to provide our guests with a high quality guided hunt – with comfortable accommodations where they can cook, relax and enjoy their own group of friends without the schedule and format of a lodge setting.
High Plains Wingshooters is located just minutes west of Torrington on the banks of the North Platte River. HPW guests will enjoy staying in the heart of Honker Heaven.
*No-host guest lodge – accommodation much nicer than a house, but self-service with no daily room or cleaning service. A full kitchen is available for guests to prepare their own meals.
Lodge
Lodging in Torrington with High Plains Wingshooters is an extremely comfortable completely remodeled farm house. The house is on our farm just 5 miles west of Torrington and is set to make your stay perfect.
Five bedrooms with two beds each will comfortably sleep 8 guests in a party.
A full kitchen is available so you can handle your own meals right in the house. All the utensils as well as cookware and dinnerware are available. A barbeque grill is available as well, so bring your food and make your meals memorable!
The mud room/gun room is also a major part of the house. You will be able to come in after a day's hunt and get out of your hunting gear inside a warm room, but not have to drag all your dirty wet gear into your room! We also provide a gun cleaning station and gun racks in the mud room so that you can keep your shotgun in top operating condition for the next day's hunt.
No guns will be allowed into the house for the safety of all guests, but the racks in the gun room make it very convenient. After dinner, settle into the great room near the rock fire place, to watch your favorite sporting event, or play a game of pool. It's all about relaxing at the end of the day!
Wingshooting
Canada Goose Hunting Wyoming may not be your first thought when thinking Goose hunting guides, but the HPW goose hunting guide experience will show you why it will be your first choice in the future. We are located near Torrington and hunt ducks and geese on the famous North Platte River just a few short miles from Nebraska. Why not go to Nebraska and hunt geese?
A couple good reasons are:
1) Wyoming currently has a liberal 4 goose daily limit while Nebraska is just at 3.
2) Since hunting the North Platte in Nebraska has been promoted for years it is much more popular and therefore has a lot more hunting pressure. So that answers Why Wyoming?
Why HPW?
Here's why. HPW has access to nearly 15 first class heated pit blinds throughout Goshen County. Having said that you can guess that our plan is to not overhunt a pit. We hunt our blinds carefully and keep the areas from being overhunted and we always have birds working at least a couple of our blinds.
Secondly, our guides put out large spreads of decoys daily. We don't put the dekes out and leave them all season which will sour birds that stay over for extended periods of time. We pick up and put out daily. Spreads of 10-30 dozen decoys are the norm.
Our blinds are the most comfortable you can imagine. Large and roomy each shooter has a lid of his own. The lids are mesh so you can watch the action as the guide works the birds in to range. The lids glide easily out of the way giving you a large space to shoot at any angle.
We don't mix groups so you will hunt with the group you come with and no one else, unless special arrangements are made with your permission.
Most of our shooting is within 30 yards and all is within 45. We don't jump shoot or pass shoot.....we are about bringing birds in close over decoys!
Wyoming Goose guides are few and far between but HPW is your source for premier honker hunting with excellent guides, pits, hunting and liberal limits. You won't regret giving Wyoming a second thought as we're certain it will become your first choice for Honker hunting in the future.
Duck Hunting HPW Duck Hunts primarily take place in Goshen and Platte Counties of Wyoming. Fantastic lease properties consist of prairie marshes, grain fields, and rivers which provide great opportunities to pursue ducks.
October - November constitutes our early season where our efforts are concentrated around open pond water, and the North Platte River. Early season bag limits can consist of blue wing teal, shovelers, gadwall, widgeon, pintail, wood ducks, and mallards.
December - January we begin concentrating on the North Platte River and various corn fields in pursuit of feeding ducks. Late season hunts primarily produce bag limits of hardy mallards. As some lucky clients found out last year the corn field duck hunting combined with the perfect snow cover conditions produced amazing results.
On your duck hunt you can expect to be in pit blinds, grass blinds, or layout blinds.

Snow goose hunts in Eastern Wyoming can be a great spring diversion.
These geese are not the high flying migrators. They are staged birds that are coming off local reservoirs and going out to feed. They act much like Honkers in that respect.
We have acquired access all over the valley and have set ourselves up in some of the best hunting areas for snow geese. We have a couple spreads of 1500 decoys that we utilize and move to place in front of the flocks.
If the weather cooperates and the birds fly our direction it is not uncommon to kill over 40 birds in a day. The downside of snow goose hunting near Torrington...it’s either great or it’s not. While we don’t get the volume of birds the Rainwater Basin gets, the hunting can often be as good or even better.

Pit Blinds
Our goose pits are extremely comfortable and will shoot up to 5 hunters. Each hunter has his own lid for viewing the action and also so that each has his/her own space!
These are wood blinds buried in the ground with mesh lids so that each hunter can see the action! Propane heaters in the blinds keep the hunters comfortable even in the worst weather.
These are the most efficient blinds we have ever seen so we have upgraded all of our underground blinds to this model. Our clients the last two years have raved about the comfort and practicality of these blinds and many have said they are the best they’ve hunted in. Some of our duck blinds are above ground along the river, but are made in a similar style and are very comfortable to sit in and shoot from.
You will be warm, dry and safe in these blinds. They are a true pleasure to hunt from.
For those who are able and interested we do have lay out blinds to utilize areas geese are using where we don’t have pits.
